Logging Flight Experience

Logging Flight Experience

One way to get started toward Sport Pilot is to begin by correctly logging your current flight experience. The way to do that is to be registered as a student pilot, or higher, by ASC. Once registered, the Sport Pilot rules allow the pilot to log flight experience relevant to the areas of operation applying to Sport Pilot. Documentation from ASC is used to confirm pilot status.

The new changes to the Federal Aviation Regulations (Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations) provide for the use aeronautical experience obtained in ultralight vehicles to apply toward Sport Pilot under 14 CFR 61.52. Per paragraph 61.329, the individual must be a registered pilot with a FAA-recognized ultralight organization at the time the experience was obtained. The FAA has interpreted this to mean at least a registered student pilot.

The information that needs to logged, per paragraph 61.51, includes:

The date

Total flight time

Location

Type and identification of aircraft

Type of experience (i.e. Solo, Pilot in command, training)

Conditions of flight (day or night)

For training time, it must be endorsed by the instructor including the instructor name, certificate number and expiration date.

The training for Sport Pilot must address the areas of operation as listed in paragraph 61.311. These include:

Preflight preparation

Preflight procedures

Airport operations

Takeoffs, landings and go-arounds

Performance maneuvers

Ground reference maneuvers

Navigation

Slow flight (if appropriate)

Stalls (if appropriate)

Emergency operations

Post-flight procedures

To use this experience to apply to Sport Pilot, paragraph 61.329a(2) requires a certified letter from the organization documenting the individual’s registered pilot (or student pilot) status with category and class of aircraft.

If you are a registered with ASC as a student pilot, registered pilot or BFI, we can provide the documentation you need to apply these hours towards Sport Pilot. Just call ASC and request the letter. Be sure to verify the correct type of training so that the category and class can be shown on the letter.

Examples of category and class are:

PPW is powered para wing and stands for the category of "powered parachute" and class of "land".

PFW is powered fixed wing and stands for the category of "airplane" and the class of "land".

PWS is powered weight shift and stands for the category of "weight-shift-control" and the class of "land".
