Peer
Review Committee Member, Limitations and Responsibilities
As
a Peer Review Committee member the following limitations are critical:
1)
You must not allow anyone to know that you are serving on a peer review
committee, especially not which one in particular.
2)
You may not investigate anything on your own.
Even if you know the person the peer review encompasses you cannot
get data for yourself. This is a
requirement because we do not want any hearsay or pseudo-evidence to come into
the meeting. Also, the defendant has
a right to respond to any and all evidence presented.
3)
You are responsible for making a mature and fair decision.
You will only be allowed to decide: guilty, not guilty, or more
investigation needed in a more confined area of review.
You will not be asked to assess the penalty.
4)
Your duty as a “peer review member” is for the "good of the
community." You own actions or
history may have no influence on your decision.
If you feel your history or involvement may influence your judgment you
must decline to sit on the review.
5)
This is not a place for comparison to what others have gotten away with.
This is not a leveling of the field by corrupting our standards.
It is a fair application of the requirements.
The most substantial of these is the most difficult.
A pilot MAY NOT BE AN INSTRUCTOR if that pilot is not "a
positive influence as an instructor."
6)
You may not disclose, or allow to be implied, the names of the other people on
the peer review committee.
Given
these requirements, if you still wish to be on a peer review committee, we thank
you. You will next hear from us by
mail. We will send you the charges,
evidence and response by the defendant, including the name of the defendant.
We will give you time to read it thoroughly, and then we will call a
telecon of all the peer review members to make the decision.
If
you do not now wish to participate, please call immediately (269-781-4021) so
that we can select a new candidate. If
you do not wish to take on the pressure of a peer review, we understand and
thank you for even considering participation.
It is a very stressful duty.
Thanks
