Sport
Pilot for…Manufacturers Manufacturers
are now looking at remarkable opportunity, the ability to be a small efficient
shop that can certify Light Sport Aircraft for sale, ready to fly.
ASC has been instrumental in shaping these new standards.
Chairing three of the seven ASTM® Committees and serving on all other
committees in some form, ASC directors and members are deeply involved in making
the standards work. The Powered
Parachute standards are 12 pages long, a great deal of work in a concise
package. Meeting
the ASTM standards means a manufacturer can have an FAA certified product and
have the certainty of support that the consensus standard is strong.
ASTM monitors and controls the process to verify that it meets
requirements. ASTM even stands ready
to defend the standards in court. If
manufacturers can show compliance with the verified standards, then defense of
the design becomes much easier. Third
party support is also available to allow the manufacturers to have additional
support that they meet the standard. SLSA
for Training and Rental Why
should a manufacturer produce a SLSA? The
first and best salesman for an aircraft is the aircraft itself.
Pilots love the first aircraft they learn to fly.
It is natural. Trainers are a
critical force for selling new aircraft. That
and the low cost will be driving forces for manufacturers to sell SLSA.
Having at least one SLSA will make it possible for the manufacturer to
sell kit built ELSA. The
manufacturers could just sell 51% amateur built experimental.
They could still qualify to be flown by Sport Pilots.
However, they would not gain from the training exposure.
Plan
of Action for Manufacturers 1)
Join ASTM at www.astm.org 2)
Request the standards Volume 15.07 as part of your membership.
The database option works well. 3)
Review your operations in relation to the standards. 4)
Third party support is available to help you complete your LSA
certification. 5)
Update your operation to comply with the standards. 6)
Certify and sell SLSA and ELSA kit built airplanes.
